This approach, also known as “Human-Focused Design,” prioritizes human motivation in a system over pure efficiency. The term Gamification originates from the gaming industry, which was the first to master Human-Focused Design. Human-Focused Design Function-Focused Design, emphasizes getting a job done quickly, assuming that workers will complete their tasks simply because they are required to do so. However, Human-Focused Design considers the emotions, insecurities, and motivations of individuals in a system and aims to optimize their engagement and satisfaction. What is the Octalysis Framework? Octalysis Framework is a gamification framework developed by Yu-Kai Chou, which applies game-like elements to real-world activities to optimize for human motivation rather than pure efficiency. The framework is designed around eight core drives that motivate people towards certain activities, including Epic Meaning and Calling, Development and Accomplishment, Empowerment of Creativity and Feedback, and Ownership and Possession. Octalysis has become required literature in gamification instruction worldwide and is available in 16 languages. The eight core drives of the Octalysis Framework are: According to Yu-kai Chou, everything we do is based on one or more of these eight core drives. The Octalysis Framework provides a comprehensive framework for understanding human motivation and its use cases to create engaging experiences. How does the Octalysis Framework work? The Octalysis Framework identifies which core drives are most relevant to a user or activity. By understanding which core drives motivate, gamification designers can create experiences that leverage these drives to keep users engaged. For example, let’s say you’re designing a fitness app. By using the Octalysis Framework, you might identify that Development & Accomplishment and Ownership & Possession are the two most relevant core drives for your users. You could then create challenges and rewards that tap into these core drives, such as badges for reaching certain milestones or virtual trophies for completing difficult workouts. In addition to identifying the most relevant core drives, the Octalysis Framework also provides a way to balance extrinsic motivators (such as points, badges, and leaderboards) with intrinsic motivators (such as the sense of accomplishment and progress). By balancing these motivators, gamification designers can create experiences that are both engaging and meaningful to users. White Hat vs. Black Hat Gamification It’s important to note that the Octalysis Framework focuses on “White Hat” gamification, which means using gamification for positive purposes such as education, health, and personal growth. In contrast, “Black Hat” gamification manipulates users for negative purposes, such as addiction, deception, and exploitation. Yu-kai Chou argues that Black Hat gamification is ultimately unsustainable, as it relies on short-term gains at the expense of long-term engagement and trust. In contrast, White Hat gamification is focused on creating meaningful experiences that align with users’ goals and values. Using the Octalysis Framework for Creative Process One of the most powerful aspects of the Octalysis Framework is its ability to enhance the creative process. By understanding the different Core Drives, gamification designers can create experiences that engage users and inspire them to be more creative. Empowerment of Creativity & Feedback is one of the Core Drives that is particularly relevant to the creative process. This Core Drive allows users to experiment, try new things, and explore different possibilities. When users engage in a creative process, they need to have the ability to see the results of their creativity, receive feedback, and respond in turn. This is where gamification can help. For example, a gamification designer could create a platform where users can submit their creative work, receive feedback from others, and earn points or badges for their efforts. This would create a sense of accomplishment and motivate users to continue to develop their skills and creativity. Another Core Drive that can be used to enhance the creative process is Development & Accomplishment. This Core Drive is about progressing, developing skills, and overcoming challenges. By creating challenges relevant to the creative process, gamification designers can motivate users to work harder and develop their skills. For example, a gamification designer could create a challenge to design a logo or create a piece of artwork within a set time limit. This would inspire users to be more creative and help them develop their skills through practice. Finally, Epic Meaning & Calling can also enhance the creative process. This Core Drive is about believing that you are doing something greater than yourself or being “chosen” to do something. By creating experiences that inspire users to feel like they are contributing to a greater cause or working towards a higher purpose, gamification designers can motivate users to be more creative and engaged. For example, as a gamification designer, you could create a challenge to design a charity or non-profit organization logo. This would give users a sense of purpose and inspire them to use their creativity to make a positive impact. Whatever the reason, abandoned projects can be a huge blow to morale and a waste of resources. However, abandoned projects can also be valuable for learning from the experiences and providing insights into how to improve future projects. In this article, I’ll share some tips on how to deal with abandoned projects and make the most out of the situation. Acknowledge the disappointment According to a study by the Project Management Institute, 56% of projects fail due to poor communication. This can lead to misunderstandings, missed deadlines, and an abandoned project. It’s important to acknowledge the disappointment of an abandoned project but not dwell on it. Take time to assess what went wrong and learn from it. Remember that every failed project is an opportunity to improve and grow. The Boeing 787 Dreamliner project faced a crisis due to a series of technical and design issues. The project faced significant delays, cost overruns, and safety concerns, including battery fires. The resulting grounding of the Dreamliner by aviation authorities caused a huge financial hit to Boeing and damage to its reputation. Boeing ultimately had to undertake extensive redesigns and repairs and make significant changes to its supply chain and project management processes. Despite the challenges, the Dreamliner project eventually resumed operations and has become a successful aircraft for Boeing. The root cause of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner project crisis was poor project management and oversight and a lack of communication and coordination between different teams and suppliers. The decision to outsource major aircraft components, including the fuselage and wings, to various suppliers worldwide, led to numerous quality control issues and delays. Additionally, changes to the original design and production schedule further complicated the project, causing significant setbacks and increasing costs. Ultimately, the project suffered from a lack of clear direction, poor communication, and insufficient oversight, all contributing to the ensuing crisis. Conduct a post-mortem analysis Once the initial disappointment has subsided, conducting a post-mortem analysis is important to understand what went wrong and why. This will help you identify recurring issues and develop strategies to address them. It’s also important to involve all stakeholders in the analysis to ensure everyone understands what happened and what can be done to prevent it.Post-mortem analysis, also known as a retrospective or a project review, is a process that occurs after a project or an event has ended to evaluate what happened, why it happened, and what can be learned from the experience. The analysis aims to identify successes, failures, and opportunities for improvement and provide insights that can help inform future projects or events. The analysis involves examining the project’s goals, objectives, and outcomes, reviewing the processes and procedures used, and gathering feedback from stakeholders, team members, and customers. The information gathered is then used to develop future improvements or action recommendations. Keep the lines of communication open Clear communication is key. It is important to have a clear and open line of communication with all stakeholders involved in the project, including team members, sponsors, and clients. It is important to establish clear and measurable project goals and objectives from the outset and revisit them regularly throughout the project to ensure they are still relevant and achievable. Using Agile methodology emphasizes collaboration, flexibility, and continuous improvement. It involves breaking the project into smaller, more manageable pieces and working in short sprints to deliver incremental value. By using Agile methodology, teams can quickly adapt to changing requirements and priorities and can ensure that the project stays on track. Have a solid project management plan. The most interesting thing about the show is completing a project in 12 hours. In this blog entry, I’ll discuss my main observations from the show, emphasizing the critical aspects of time-constrained project management. The Challenges of Time-Constrained Project Management Time is a critical factor in project management, and when projects are time-constrained, the challenges increase manifold. Time-constrained projects require efficient planning, coordination, and execution to meet the project’s objectives within the given timeframe. Undertaking a time-constrained project like the “Instant Dream Home” comes with challenges. 1. Time Management: In time-constrained projects, time management is crucial. Every minute counts and delays can lead to missed deadlines and jeopardize the entire project. The project manager must have a detailed plan, including a schedule and contingency plans, to ensure the team stays on track.  In Instant Dream Home, the most obvious challenge is the short timeline and project plan. It is extremely hard to take just one day to complete such a project that typically takes several weeks. This constraint puts extreme pressure on the project team to plan, design, and execute the project flawlessly. I think the “Instant Dream Home (IDH)” team relies heavily on effective project management techniques to overcome this challenge. For instance, they spend three months preparing for one 12-hour workday. Every team member knows their role and what to do to ensure the project’s success. 2. Resource Management: Resource management is another significant challenge in time-constrained projects. The project manager must effectively allocate resources, including personnel, equipment, and materials, to meet the project’s goals while staying within budget and time constraints. IDH team ensures all the necessary materials and equipment are available in the right place at the right time. Since the tasks depend on each other, the situation gets more challenging. Any delays or mistakes in procurement could quickly derail the project scheduling and jeopardize the tight timeline. 3. Planning a project without being on-site Another challenge in time-constrained project management is planning the project without being on-site. As highlighted in “Instant Dream Home,” the project team has to rely on pictures and videos to make design decisions. This situation can make it challenging to visualize the space and can lead to design mistakes that could be costly and time-consuming to fix. To address this challenge, the “Instant Dream Home” team spends significant time preparing for the project, with every detail planned beforehand. They work with an accomplice who sends them pictures and videos of the space, and they use advanced software and visualization tools to create a comprehensive design plan. The project manager must ensure that quality standards are maintained throughout the project, regardless of time constraints. The team takes pride in their work and focuses on delivering the highest quality renovation within the given timeframe. Time-constrained projects are challenging, but with effective project management, they can be successfully completed. Instant Dream Home provides valuable lessons for project managers on overcoming the challenges of time-constrained projects, including effective time and resource management, maintaining quality standards, and having contingency plans in place. By following these principles, project managers can deliver successful projects within tight deadlines. Specifically, Agile is an iterative approach focusing on collaboration, flexibility, and responsiveness. At the same time, Waterfall is a linear, sequential approach that focuses on completing each development phase before moving on to the next. VUCA is an acronym for Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, and Ambiguity.
